It was a radiant Sunday morning when the Bike n’ Blend team rolled into the Northcote Aquatic and Recreation Centre (NARC) for the much-anticipated NARC Community Open Day. The team was buzzing with excitement, ready to add a splash of fun and flavor to the day’s festivities.

The Setup: A Colorful Array by the Poolside

As the sun began to climb, we set up our vibrant smoothie stations right by the kiddie pool, where laughter and splashes set a joyful background score. Each station was decked out in bright colors, with banners fluttering in the breeze—each bearing a tantalizing promise of delicious, healthy smoothies.

The Event Kicks Off: Pedals in Motion

The gates opened, and a tide of families poured in, their excitement palpable. Kids, tugging at their parents’ hands, made a beeline for the smoothie bikes. It didn’t take long for the first smoothie maker – 6 year old Ellie, to hop on a bike. Her legs pedaled earnestly as she watched bananas, strawberries, and a splash of coconut water whirl into a delightful pink concoction. Cheers erupted from the crowd as Ellie beamed with pride, ringing the bike bell and then sipping her self-made smoothie

The Fun Twist: A Challenge Among Parents

Midway through the day, our team proposed a fun twist: a smoothie-making race for the parents! Laughter filled the air as moms and dads took to the bikes, racing to blend the fastest and tastiest smoothie. The competitive spirit was infectious, drawing even more spectators. The winner, a dad named Roberto, was awarded a free month’s pool pass, his triumphant grin as wide as the pool behind him.

The Bike N Blend team kept the kids and adults entertained and refreshed with a cold smoothie on a hot day with over 500 smoothies made!  In fact, the demand was so great the Leena had to run around and find more ice to keep up with the demand!

So many people remarked that it was quite the setup and seemed to be a real crowd-puller.

Bike N Blend are not just here to entertain but also promote healthy living. It’s a great way for pools like NARC to attract new visitors and keep the regulars coming back. Imagine making this a regular feature, perhaps even using it to kick off a summer wellness campaign.

A Lasting Impact

As the day wound down, the feedback was overwhelmingly positive. Parents appreciated the healthy, engaging break for their kids, and the kids just loved making their own smoothies.

The Bike n’ Blend day at NARC was not just a success; it was a start of what promised to be an exciting new chapter for community events—a chapter filled with health, engagement, and a lot of smooth pedaling.

Leena van Raay Bike n Blend founder having fun

Leena was celebrating with her team making it all happen whilst running around getting more ice as the demand was so high!

“I bought lunch for the team as they were so busy it was hard to get a break to buy food too. I always look after my staff where I can so they can look after the thirsty crowds :)” Leena said.
